Offshore Safety Paramedic

The Offshore Safety Paramedic Medic is primarily responsible for rig safety activities, including inspections and emergency medical procedures.

Responsibilities

The following represents the majority of the duties performed by the position, but is not meant to be all inclusive nor present other duties from being assigned when necessary. Essential functions are noted by an asterisk (*).
1. Conducts pre-operation safety meetings prior to the start of special operations; participates in all hazardous operations as a safety observer; trains rig personnel on proper procedures prior to the start of special operations; coaches rig personnel on proper procedures.
2. Inspects and maintains life saving/fire fighting apparatus equipment in compliance with governmental regulations.
3. Files safety related and certification materials for personnel; maintains injury and illness log.
4 Tracks inventory and orders medical / safety supplies.
5. Conducts general safety training sessions regarding the proper operation of safety and fire fighting apparatus and emergency procedures to abandon rigs.
6. Performs emergency medical procedures including the preparation of injured personnel for transport to medical facilities.
7. Accompanies injured personnel during transportation.
8. Assists in the development and evaluates performance of emergency recovery drills.
9. Inputs event reports and patient encounter forms into the HSE database.
10. Assists with accident investigations.
11. Informs appropriate personnel of hazardous chemicals on rig; ensures MSDS documents are obtained upon delivery of chemicals; reviews new MSDS with rig crews upon receipt.
12. Trains personnel on proper selector, use care and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE); Inspects respiratory protection for proper cleaning, care, and storage; Inspects fall protection harnesses, lanyards, beam straps, and lad-safe systems to ensure no damage or excessive wear or tear.
13. Conducts platform rig safety orientation to new employees and visitors to the well site.
14. Directs workers to integrate safety into the erecting, dismantling, and moving of H&P drilling rigs in a marine environment.
15. Inspects rig for hazards and submits electronic HSE inspection reports.
16. Identifies, develops, and recommends revision of standards, operating procedures, and new programs to improve safety; provides staff with clear and concise written and verbal guidelines. Serves as focal point for the Rig Safety Management Team on location.
17. Initiates Permit to Work system documents for all work crews in compliance with Operator’s and H&P’s established guidelines.
18. Acts as designated Helicopter Landing Officer for the platform.
19. Serves as designated Competent Person for multiple disciplines of operations on platform.
20. Conducts atmospheric testing of environmental conditions.

Qualifications 
Position requires skills normally acquired through the completion of high school or GED equivalent plus additional college level training equivalent to an Associate’s degree or equivalent in order to be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
This position requires between three and five years of prior experience in procedures with safety and medical procedures.
This position requires 3 years minimum of emergency medical services experience.
This position requires working knowledge of computer based resources and software.


LICENSES

This position requires first aid and CPR training and an Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic certificate.

Working Conditions
Work is normally performed out-of-doors, where exposure to atmospheric conditions of extreme heat or cold, fumes, and gases is frequent. Work assignments are generally 14 consecutive days, 14 – 16 hours per day with approximately 4-6 hours sleep per 24 hour period. The noise level is high and would include the sounds of rig equipment.
The work exposes the incumbent to blood borne pathogens, high pressure, moving/mechanical parts, high/exposed places on the rigs and toxic/caustic chemicals.


Physical Demands
The worker is required to perform most work while standing and walking. Work may involve sitting for brief periods of time.
The work of this position is considered “heavy” physically, which involves the occasional movement of up to 100 lbs. or the frequent movement of up to 50 lbs. to lift, push, pull or carry such objects as medical equipment.
The work of this position requires vision and hearing acuity to monitor vital signs.
The work of this position requires smell acuity to detect gas.
